48 Hours in Killarney

Killarney is one of those destinations where it can be all things to all people. Whatever your holiday preference, Killarney has it all whether it be a relaxing holiday taking leisurely strolls through the national park or exploring historic gems like Ross Castle. If you are an adventurer who enjoys an active break, then taking advantage of this town’s superb cycling infrastructure and kayaking on the lakes is for you. If you’re a connoisseur of fine food then Killarney has something to suit all pallets including traditional Irish cuisine using the finest of local ingredients, to international dishes to delight pallets that are particularly adventurous.

If your stay in Killarney is short that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have to me memorable. You can sample many of Killarney’s delights that give you a real sense of this beautiful part of the world, and why it remains one of the most enduring tourist destinations in Ireland.

So, if you had only 48 hours in Killarney what should you consider doing, well perhaps mix a little bit of nature, culture and food together. Begin your whistle stop stay with a visit to the historic Muckross House where you will enjoy some of the most breath-taking scenery that Ireland has to offer. View the beautiful Killarney lakes and hillsides whilst at the same time enjoy the visual delights of manicured gardens. After your stroll why not go inside Muckross House and enjoy a tour exploring the splendid interior and discover the fascinating history of this stunning Tudor period building. Oh and lets not forget the famous horses and jaunting cars! Take a trip through the park in one of these and experience travel from a bygone era.  If you would like to work up an appetite a trip to Torc Waterfall is a must, climb the copious number of steps to the top and be rewarded by the splendour of Torc Waterfall in all its glory, whilst being surrounded by the national park’s canopy of trees and plants.

As it approaches evening and you’ve worked up an appetite, go to one of Killarney’s many pubs where you’ll enjoy some fine traditional food and sample Irish traditional music as you relax in comfortable surroundings.

On your final day in Killarney arise early and enjoy a sumptuous breakfast in the Lake Hotel to get you ready for the day. Pop in your car and travel through the Ring of Kerry and witness the natural beauty of our local countryside, absorbing sights of majestic mountains, stunning coasts and of course our great lakes.  However, if a drive doesn’t take your fancy there’s always a boat trip across the Killarney lakes where you can experience Killarney from a totally different perspective. As you travel through the lake you will become totally engrossed by the surrounding hills and if you’re lucky enough you might even catch a glimpse of one of our resident White-tailed eagles.

After your trip around the Ring of Kerry or your boat trip across the lake finish your stay on a high note, enjoy a delicious late lunch in the Lake Hotel bistro and relax as you look back on 48 hours of memorable experiences.
